How to know the size of your HVAC unit?

The hotter it gets, the more A/C you’ll need. It’s important that you have the right Air Condition system for your home and make sure it’s the correct size! Many people don’t realize the importance of having the right size of your system but it’s imperative you pick the right size for you.  You must make sure that the size of the system is compatible with your home. If you purchase an A/C unit that is too small, your home will not be cool enough. If you purchase a unit that is too big, it can leave a lot of excess humidity in the house and will use more energy which will lead to higher costing utility bills.

Air Conditioning size capacity is measured by BTUs (British Thermal Units) or by tons. When installing a new HVAC unit, consult a technician first to make sure you are getting the right one.  The above image shows how you can measure the size of you’re A/C by square feet.  Research shows that another way to figure out the correct size of your unit is by using this equation: (SQ FT of Home x 30 divided by 12,000) -1.0). So here’s a good example. Say your home is 2,000 square feet. This would be how you would calculate it.

2,000 x 30 = 60,000

60,000 / 12,000 =  5.0

5.0 – 1.0 = 4.0  So basically you would need around a 4 ton A/C unit for your home if it is around 2,000 square feet.

It really is imperative to make sure the sizing is correct and that you are measuring it correctly. Any mistake on the measurements can impact the air in your home. Make sure to call PAC and we will send a technician out there to set you up with the proper system!
