Tank or Tankless Water Heater?

When purchasing a Hot Water Heater for your home, it’s important to decide which unit is better for your home.  There are differences among that two that can play a role in deciding which one is the best fit for your home. Here is a breakdown of the main components of each unit.

 

Traditional Tank Water Heater

  • A Traditional Water Heater can store and preheat about 30-50 gallons of Water in a Tank.
  • The water that is preheated is used whenever someone uses the hot water in their house.
  • After usage, the tank refills to be reheated.
  • They are a lower initial cost and very easy to replace.
  • Some of the cons of the traditional Water Heater are that they have a shorter life and sometimes can possibly even run out of hot water in rare cases. (Purchasing a larger tank will avoid this kind of problem)

 

Tankless Water Heater

  • Uses a Heat source to Warm up the Cool Water rather than storing hot water in the tank
  • You will save money on your energy bill in the long run. Energy.gov states that “homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, tankless water heaters can be 24%-34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.
  • They last almost double the traditional life of a Regular Water Heater and they provide two to three gallons of hot water per minute on demand.
  • They cost slightly more to install but you are getting more bang for your buck with the Tankless Water heater.

Which is better?  Well, a traditional storage tank type water heater has a shorter life span, can run out of hot water, takes up more space, and leaves you with a higher gas bill.  BUT!  The traditional storage tank type water heater is less expensive.  The tankless water heater is smaller, uses less energy to create hot water saving on utility bills, and has a longer lifespan than traditional tanked water heaters.  BUT!  The cost to install is higher especially if you have to retrofit in an existing space.
