Tips For Never Worrying About Toilet Leaks

A homeowners worst nightmare is often a plumbing issue that will damage your home or interrupt your daily routine. A leaking toilet can do both if not addressed quickly. Imagine not being able to flush your toilet properly or paying thousands more yearly for wasted water.

While leaking toilets are one of the more common residential plumbing issues, they’re often overlooked by many homeowners. Do you remember the last time you inspected the tank behind your toilet? If the answer is no, it may be time to take a look.

Like any appliance in your home, your toilet can be susceptible to deterioration with age. Without any upkeep or maintenance, you could be quickly looking at a major plumbing emergency. So what can you do to start? Read on to learn a bit about the nuances of toilet leaks.

Inspect Your Toilet Flapper Regularly

Your toilet flapper is key to the flushing process. When you push your lever down, the flapper opens, allowing water to flow through and remove waste from the bowl. When it’s done, it seals the inlet pipe again, letting your toilet refill for the next use.

Unfortunately, toilet flappers are made from rubber or plastic. This makes them more susceptible to deterioration, which is why it’s always a good idea to perform regular inspections. Be on the lookout for:

  • flapperWarping
  • Cracks
  • Worn seals
  • Grime buildup
  • Discoloration
  • Rusted chains

The toilet flapper is one of the most commonly replaced components of your toilet. Because of this, they can easily be found at your local hardware store or your plumbing contractor will have one in stock.

Toilet flushing assemblies also come in various shapes and sizes, so be sure you know what system you have before your start dissembling anything.

Avoiding The Common Causes For Running Toilets

runningtoiletOutside of the toilet flapper, other issues can cause toilet leaks as well. Many homeowners put tablets in their toilet to help with cleaning and odor control.

In some instances, those tablets have been known to become obstructions for your flapper.

If they go the wrong way in your toilet, you can easily be looking at the need for plumbing replacement. Another common issue is deterioration. Like any appliance or fixture in your home, your toilet will suffer from wear and tear overt time.

Some of the more susceptible components are seals and fittings. While some leaks are large and will be noticed quickly, other leaks are much smaller and can go unnoticed for some time. These are the dangerous leaks that lead to mold growth and property damage.

The Benefits of Regular Maintenance

maintainThe best way to keep your home and family safe is with regular toilet maintenance. This can be as complex as replacing the entire assembly or as simple as performing a visual inspection of your toilet flapper.

How A Backflow Preventer will protect your water

Having a Backflow Preventer is extremely beneficial to the water in your home.  Your water supply in your home Is kept at a high pressure so water will easily come out of any tap in your home.

When it comes to sewage system they are not pressurized, and if anything happens to increase the pressure of the exit drain or decrease your water supply pressure, this can cause backflow.

According to research, there are almost 10,000 reported case of backflow contamination each year and this could be extremely harmful to you and your family. In some cases, the contamination can lead to fatalities if it’s major.

Paul says the best way to stop this issue is by installing a Backflow Prevention Device.  A backflow preventer is a device that’s installed on your home’s water pipes that allows water to flow in one direction. Basically, the sole job is to prevent your drinking water from being contaminated to any type of backflow. There are two types of Backflow Preventer devices. They are:

  • Air Gap- it’s a simple device between open space that would connect to a plumbing system. Basically, it is placed anywhere that large amounts of water can collect or pile up
  • The other type of device is a Specialized Backflow Preventer Valve. Only a licensed plumber would know where to install this valve because it is installed in a strategic place that the plumber knows contamination is entering your water pipes.

If you want to keep your family safe, then the importance of Backflow Preventer is extremely important. It allows the water to flow safely through your house without contaminants or pollutants affecting your family. Getting your Backflow checked at least once a year by a licensed professional will also ensure that everything is functioning properly and that there are no contaminants. Many people don’t realize the importance of the preventer, but they don’t realize what kind of damage these contaminants and pollutants can do to your body.

Using The Best Plumbing Tools to Prevent Backflow

Even though our municipal water supply is safe and clean for use, we should not dismiss the possibility of contamination. Improper piping, faulty connections and lack of backflow preventers can cause wastewater to infiltrate your fresh water supply.

This backflow of sewage entering your clean water supply can be blocked by using the best plumbing tools. It is important to know about the different types of backflow preventers available so that you can make an educated choice when purchasing one for your home.

Types of Backflow Prevention Devices

“whatis”“Backflow” occurs when wastewater in your plumbing flows backward, into your home, and blends with the home’s clean water supply. This can present serious health risks to occupants who consume from the water supply.

The use of backflow prevention devices is a requirement by many building authorities for the prevention of backflow.

Hospital water supplies, municipal water systems, food processing factories, all utilize backflow preventers to secure the public from potentially dangerous water contamination.

What Are Air Gaps?

“airgap”Contaminated water and clean water should never meet! Each should always flow through separate pipes. The best way to prevent this type of backflow with an air gap.

An air gap in plumbing is used to describe an open, upright space or gap between the water break and a fixture’s flood level.

Wastewater is sent over the gap of air, therefore, blocking contamination. Air gaps are a guarantee that your clean water supply is protected from wastewater contamination.

Pressure Vacuum Breakers in Irrigation

“vacuumbreakers”Another backflow prevention device, called pressure vacuum breakers, will shield against water backflow. They are instrumental in irrigation systems, used to prevent non-drinking water from inadvertently entering the clean water supply by way of an irrigation system.

The tank will shut off a control valve that reduces any backflow from leaking into the clean water supply when the water pressure is below the air pressure.

An atmospheric vacuum breaker, or AVB, is a dependable and cost-efficient backflow prevention device with a top lid that opens to let air into the system and fills it up if back-siphoning should occur. The top lid works with a poppet valve that is squeezed by the water system pressure.

Which Backflow Preventer Should You Get?

“rightforhome”The backflow prevention device that you buy depends largely on your plumbing system and sewer line. Pressure vacuum breakers can be used in homes to restrict backflow as a result of a vacuum force in the pipeline. PVBs will send air into a pipe to stop the absorption.

You may add more modifications to the backflow from inside the plumbing system. Controlled pressure zone preventers and assembly preventers can quickly shut close if a backflow that clogs the pipeline system should occur.

Not only are backflow prevention devices highly effective, but they are also a requirement in many cities. Check with your city’s building authorities for their recommendations for plumbing backflow preventer preconditions and if permits are required.

How to Clean A Keurig!

How to Clean A Keurig

I’m sure many of you LOVE Coffee,,(who doesn’t?); If you use a Keurig Coffee Machine, have you ever actually taken some time to clean it? All you’ll need is a dry cloth, some water, white vinegar, and some soap as well. It’s a few simple steps

These are some simple Instructions to clean it:

  1. Unplug the machine:It's a simple but important step.
  2. Disassemble and wash removable parts:Remove the water reservoir and lid, mug stand, and also the K-cup holder. Wash these pieces in warm, soapy water and dry.
  3. Wipe machine surface:With a clean, dry cloth (or a damp cloth where needed), wipe the surface of the machine. Don't forget the area around the coffee pod holder where coffee and tea granules may collect. Return all the removable parts and plug in the machine.
  4. Grab the vinegar: White distilled vinegar will help descale (remove lime and scale buildup) your coffee maker, which is key to helping it run. (You can also use a descaling solution.) Fill the water reservoir halfway with vinegar.
  5. Add water: Fill the reservoir the rest of the way with water.
  6. Run the machine: Start the brew cycle without inserting a K-cup. Repeat until reservoir is empty, discarding the mug contents after each brewing cycle. This process will help remove lime and scale buildup. Keurig recommends descaling your brewer at least every 3 to 6 months depending on your water source.
  7. Repeat rinse with water:Repeat the process using only plain water in the reservoir to remove any residual vinegar taste.
  8. Use as usual: Then, when you're ready you can brew a cup of coffee like normal.

Make sure you protect your family’s health by cleaning your Keurig!
