A simple, direct faucet replacement in New York City generally doesn’t require a Department of Buildings permit when the hot and cold shutoff valves and fixture trap remain unchanged. The fixture trap is the curved section of drain piping that holds water and blocks sewer gases. Permit requirements depend on the plumbing changes involved, not the faucet style.

Altering, rearranging, relocating, or permanently removing plumbing piping generally requires a Department of Buildings permit. New plumbing or gas piping also generally requires a permit and supervision by a Licensed Master Plumber, a plumber authorized to oversee regulated plumbing work.

Replacing a faucet and changing the piping that serves it aren’t necessarily the same scope of work. We evaluate the existing connections so any required plumbing changes can be identified and discussed separately from a straightforward fixture replacement.
